This post will be short and sweet. This year, thanks to the teacher across the hall who is awesome, I decided to have my Spanish 2s write one journal entry a week. We started this in January because I didn't think they were at the level to write too much back in August. I wanted to share some of the stuff they've been able to write.
Today, I had the crazy idea to have them write about old pets. They weren't sad, but I'm either laughing or crying (or both) reading these! And I am super impressed with their use of imperfect. Translations are underneath if you'd like to know what each is saying. Some of them I think are hilarious! This is in no way me making fun of my kids, because I've seen that done and I would never do that. Teenagers are just so...blunt sometimes. I just love these!
*disclaimer* I did not correct absolutely everything as I think it's overwhelming for the kids. I just correct a few things for each kid every week, and then they go back and correct the rest after we discuss it together.

I had a lot of pets. I had some cats, dogs, and a frog. His name is Darth Maul. He was poisonous and small. And he ate worms. He died a long time ago.

I had a dog. His name was Scrappy. He was bad every day. He never listened to me. I had him for a year because he was bad.

I had a parakeet. His name is Alvin. Alvin is a boy. Boy died. He was blue and white. We had a dog too.

I had a pet. Pet was a chinchilla. His name was Diablo Sanchez. He threw his food all the time. He was "a lot" bad.

Me: *crying* :((
I just love these kids! Journals can be an awesome way to get to know your kiddos, no matter their age. They didn't like it at first, but it's gotten easier as the semester has gone on. This was another semi-scary thing that I tried, because I wasn't sure how the kids would handle it. Overall, they've done really well AND I can document their progress because it's all in one booklet I made for them. If I could do it over, I'd have them decorate their own journals.
